Test cards: Test the connection between your payment gateway and your webshop

Learn how to test your payment setup with our test card and why you should also run a final test with a real payment card.

TL;DR

  • Use a test card to check your payment setup while your webshop is in test mode.
  • Enable test mode in your pensopay plugin or app, then place a test order without using a real payment card.
  • This lets you check that the connection between your webshop and the payment gateway works before you go live.
  • Always test with a real payment card as well. A test card does not cover the full payment process.

  4. Why you should also test with a real payment card

Before you start:
You need an active acquirer to process a test card payment. If you do not have a merchant agreement yet but need to test your setup, you can temporarily activate Shift4 for testing:

  1. Go to Account settings > Acquirers > Shift4.

  2. Enter the number 1 in each required field.

  3. Click Activate.

Remember to deactivate Shift4 again once you have finished testing :)

1. What is a test card?

A test card is a fictitious card that simulates a regular payment card while you set up your webshop. For security reasons, it only works when your payment setup is in test mode.

2. How to test your webshop (step by step)

Follow these two steps to run a test payment:

  1. Enable test mode
Open your pensopay plugin or app in your webshop’s admin area and enable Test mode. This allows you to use test cards. While test mode is active, real payment cards will be declined automatically.
  2. Place a test order
Go through checkout and enter the following test card details in the payment window:
    • Card number: 4000 1124 0117 2221
    • Expiry date: Any future date, for example 12/2035
    • Security code (CVV): Any three digits, for example 123

3. Important: Turn off test mode when you are done

Always turn off test mode once you have finished testing. If you leave it on, your webshop will continue to decline all payments made with real payment cards. Your customers will not be able to complete their purchases.

4. Why you should also test with a real payment card

A test card only checks the connection between your webshop and pensopay. It does not test your merchant agreement with your acquirer, such as Shift 4.

As a final step, we therefore recommend making a small payment with a real payment card after turning off test mode. For example, charge EUR 1 and then refund it. This helps you check that the full payment process works, including the payout to your bank account. We hope this guide helped.
