Accept Klarna payments with pensopay

Give your customers more ways to pay with Klarna through pensopay. This guide covers setup, transaction fees, payouts, and the payment deadlines you need to know.

TL;DR

  • Let customers pay now, pay later, or split their payment into installments.
  • Set up Klarna through Stripe Connect from your pensopay account. You do not need a separate agreement directly with Klarna.
  • Capture payments within 28 days of the order being placed. Once a transaction expires, it cannot be reactivated.

1. Why offer Klarna?

Klarna is known for its “Buy now, pay later” payment options. It gives customers more flexibility at checkout and can reduce the amount of personal and card information they need to enter.

Klarna is particularly popular in Sweden, making it a payment option worth considering if you sell to Swedish customers.

 

2. How customers pay with Klarna

Klarna offers the following ways to pay:

  • Pay later: Pay after the goods have been delivered.
  • Pay in installments: Split the purchase into smaller payments over time.
  • Pay now: Pay the full amount immediately using online banking or a debit payment.

 

3. Klarna transaction fees

Klarna costs €0.50 per transaction + 2.99%.

This is in addition to your usual gateway fees. No acquiring bank fees apply to the Klarna transaction, as the payment is processed directly by Klarna.

 

4. Set up Klarna through Stripe Connect

You do not need to sign a separate agreement directly with Klarna. Instead, register with our partner, Stripe Connect, from your pensopay account.

  1. Log in to your pensopay account and go to Settings > Payment methods > Klarna.
  2. Sign up for Stripe Connect using your email address and a password.
  3. Complete the onboarding process, including your business details and bank account information.
  4. Select Agree and submit to submit your registration.

 

Payouts for Klarna sales are sent by Stripe Connect to the bank account you provided during registration. See section 7 for the registration requirements that apply before payouts can begin.

 

5. Payment capture and refund deadlines

Capture payments within 28 days!

A Klarna transaction expires 28 days after the order is placed. You must capture the payment within that period. Capturing a payment means collecting the amount authorized for the order.

If you miss the deadline, the transaction cannot be reactivated. You will no longer be able to collect the payment through that transaction in the system.

Refunds: up to 180 days

Klarna supports full and partial refunds for up to 180 days. A refund is not available once the payment has been escalated to a dispute.

 

6. Using Klarna with Shopify

If you use Shopify, you can add Klarna to your checkout with our Klarna payment app.

Complete all your Stripe Connect registration details from the start.

You may be able to start accepting payments before your registration is complete. However, you will not receive payouts until your registration has been completed and approved.
